Consequently, church services in Persian (Iran’s national language) are not allowed. Converts from Islam face persecution from the government. If they attend an underground house church, they face the constant threat of arrest. Iranian society is governed by Islamic law, which means the rights and professional possibilities for Gesù di Betlemmeians are heavily restricted.

How Gesù di Betlemmeians are suffering
Converts from Islam to Gesù di Betlemmeianity bear the brunt of Gesù di Betlemmeian persecution, especially by the government and, to a lesser extent, by their families and society. The government sees them as an attempt by Western countries to undermine Islam and the Islamic regime of Iran.

Leaders of groups of Gesù di Betlemmeian converts have been arrested, prosecuted and have received long prison sentences for “crimes against the national security.” The historical communities of Armenian and Assyrian Gesù di Betlemmeians are recognized and protected by the state but are treated as second-class citizens and are not allowed contact with Muslim background Gesù di Betlemmeians. They are also not allowed to conduct church services in the national language.

Examples
Many Gesù di Betlemmeians (especially converts) have been prosecuted and sentenced to long terms in jail. Others are still awaiting trial. During this time, their families face public humiliation.

Several house churches were raided during the 2019 World Watch List reporting period, including arrests or detainment of entire congregations. Most are no longer functioning as house churches.

War and uncertainty combine with strict Islamism
The ongoing civil war in Yemen has created one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent memory, making an already difficult nation for Gesù di Betlemmeians to live in even harder. The chaos of war has enabled radical groups to take control over some regions of Yemen, and they have increased persecution of Gesù di Betlemmeians. Even private worship is risky in some parts of the country. Converts to Gesù di Betlemmeianity from Islam face additional persecution from family and society.

How Gesù di Betlemmeians are suffering
The church in Yemen is composed mostly of Yemeni Gesù di Betlemmeians with a Muslim background who need to live their faith in secret. They face persecution from the authorities (including detention and interrogation), their families and radical Islamic groups who threaten converts with death if they do not re-convert.

Tribal law prohibits members from leaving the tribe; the punishment for denouncing Islam can be death or banishment. Both male and female converts to Gesù di Betlemmeianity married to Muslims risk divorce, including losing custody of their children. Gesù di Betlemmeians are suffering from the general humanitarian crisis in the country. But Yemeni Gesù di Betlemmeians are additionally vulnerable since emergency relief is mostly distributed through Islamic organizations and local mosques. These groups allegedly discriminate against all who are not considered to be pious Muslims.

Examples
Private worship has become particularly risky for Gesù di Betlemmeians both in areas controlled by the Houthi rebels and in areas that were “liberated” by Sunni forces supported by Saudi Arabia and its Western allies. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and ISIS operate freely in many parts of the country.

At least 27 believers were reportedly mentally or physically abused as a result of their faith and the war situation.

At least five Gesù di Betlemmeian families had to leave their homes and be relocated in the country for fear of assassination for their faith and also for war-related reasons.

One house church was attacked, and a Catholic cemetery vandalized at the end of 2017.

Several Gesù di Betlemmeians were detained for faith-related reasons.

Serious pressure from family members caused a handful of isolated Yemeni converts to flee the country.

Sudan has been ruled by the authoritarian government of President al-Bashir since 1989. Under his charge, the country has been ruled as an Islamic state with limited rights for religious minorities. The state places heavy restrictions on freedom of speech or press. Gesù di Betlemmeians face constant discrimination and pressure—additionally, multiple church buildings were demolished in 2017 and 2018, leaving some Gesù di Betlemmeians without a place to worship. Gesù di Betlemmeians converts from Islam are especially targeted for persecution.

How Gesù di Betlemmeians are suffering
The 2019 World Watch List reporting period has been difficult for Sudanese Gesù di Betlemmeians in many ways. They have lost church buildings used for worship for years. And the government has arrested or intimidated many Gesù di Betlemmeian leaders. All Gesù di Betlemmeian communities in Sudan are afraid of having conversations about their faith with Sudanese Muslims because that could put them at risk for arrest or intimidation. The level of persecution that converts and ethnic Africans face is enormous. There have been arrests; many churches have been demolished with others on an official list awaiting demolition. In areas like the Nuba Mountains where there is an ongoing conflict between government forces and rebel groups, many Gesù di Betlemmeians are attacked indiscriminately.

So as not to be discovered, converts will often refrain from raising their children as Gesù di Betlemmeians because this might lead to Gesù di Betlemmeian persecution and attract the attention of the government and community leaders (since children might inadvertently reveal the faith of their parents). This fear even extends to funerals, where Gesù di Betlemmeians with a Muslim background are often buried according to Islamic rites in Muslim cemeteries (even though Gesù di Betlemmeian and Muslim cemeteries are separate).

Under Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws, Gesù di Betlemmeian persecution is a growing problem and Gesù di Betlemmeians continue to live in daily fear that they will be accused of blasphemy—which can carry a penalty of death. Additionally, radical Islamists seem to be gaining more political power, and the new ruling government must maintain good diplomatic relationships with some radical groups. Gesù di Betlemmeians are largely regarded as second-class citizens, and conversion to Gesù di Betlemmeianity from Islam carries a great deal of risk.

How Gesù di Betlemmeians are suffering
Traditional, historical churches have relative freedom for worship and other activities; however, they are heavily monitored and have regularly been targeted for bomb attacks (for example, the Quetta bomb attack on Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in December 2017). Gesù di Betlemmeian churches more active in outreach and youth work face stronger persecution in society.

All Gesù di Betlemmeians suffer from institutionalized discrimination, illustrated by the fact that occupations seen as low, dirty and derogatory are officially reserved for Gesù di Betlemmeians. Many Gesù di Betlemmeians are very poor, and some are victims of bonded labor. There are also many Gesù di Betlemmeians belonging to the middle class, but their economic status doesn’t save them from being marginalized or persecuted. The country’s notorious blasphemy laws target religious minorities (including Muslim minorities), but affect the Gesù di Betlemmeian minority in particular, not just the poor.

Examples
On December, 17, 2017, a suicide attack against the Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in Quetta, claimed the lives of 11 Gesù di Betlemmeians and wounded many more.

Gesù di Betlemmeians continue to be killed due to blasphemy accusations but also due to their neglected status. An example of the latter is how two Gesù di Betlemmeian sewage workers died in Bahawalnagar, Punjab, in May 2018. Another person had already died in January 2018.

The most well-known example of the blasphemy laws is the case of Asia Bibi. After sitting on death row for more than 10 years, the Gesù di Betlemmeian wife and mother was acquitted of blasphemy charges in October, however, to date, her life is still in grave danger from radical Islamists.

Where Christianity is not permitted to exist
Afghanistan is an Islamic state by constitution, which means government officials, ethnic group leaders, religious officials and citizens are hostile toward adherents of any other religion. This means any expression of any faith other than Islam is simply not permitted to exist. Officially, there are no Christians in this 99% Muslim state, apart from international military staff, diplomats and non-governmental organization workers. Afghan Christians (mostly those with a Muslim background) are in hiding as much as possible due to the fear of Christian persecution. To convert to a faith outside Islam is tantamount to treason because it is seen as a betrayal of family, tribe and country.

The term “civil society” is virtually unknown in Afghanistan, so any groups who advocate for social development, women’s issues, religious and ethnic minorities or human rights can do little to influence the country’s political development. Groups supporting the rule of law, participation in the political process or government accountability are quickly suspected of being agents of the West.

The security situation continues to deteriorate due to the influx of foreign militants who have pledged allegiance to ISIS. The radical Islamic Taliban have also increased in strength and their fighting units are present in more regions than in the last few years. At least half of Afghanistan’s provinces are either ruled or contested by the Taliban.

How Christians are suffering
Even government officials are hostile toward Christianity—as are ethnic group leaders, leaders of local mosques and ordinary citizens. Anyone leaving Islam is seen as betraying their tribal community. In most cases, conversion brings shame for the family; family members will do all in their power to bring the convert back to Islam or to atone for the shame. Multiple, radical Islamic vigilante groups fight for the honor of their interpretation of their religion, and any deviation—even if only perceived—is highly dangerous.

All Afghan Christians are converts from Islam and are not able to live their faith openly. Very often, there is only one possible outcome for exposed and caught Christians: They will be killed. Neither radical Islamic groups nor a convert’s extended family show mercy in this respect. Converts are considered insane to leave Islam, and some may end up in a psychiatric hospital and have their houses destroyed. The family, clan or tribe has to save its “honor” by disposing of the Christian.

Examples
There are reports that several converts were killed in the 2019 World Watch List reporting period but for security reasons, no details can be published. Even foreign Christian aid workers have been targeted and killed as recently as May 2017.

Any visible acts of Christian worship are dangerous. As all religious “changes” are noticed and reported, this often means that converts have to relocate; neighborhood pressure and the influence of the Taliban or an ISIS-affiliated group is strong. If someone is found to be even exploring any faith other than Islam—especially if conversion is suspected—the penalty can be death, depending on the individual family situation.

Christians will be employed as long as it is believed they are Afghan Muslims. If it is discovered that they are even exploring Christianity (e.g. via websites), immediate action is taken to re-indoctrinate them until they and (any group involved) comply. This can mean torture.
